Did you know that Mobile was host to the first ever Mardi Gras celebration in 1703? That’s fifteen years before the founding of New Orleans. Though lesser known, Mardi Gras in Alabama is wildly popular and exciting. Festivities begin mid-January and culminate with Fat Tuesday parades, replete with floats, live music, extravagant costumes, and beads. Visit the Mobile Carnival Museum to learn more about the history of Mardi Gras and see sparkling crowns, robes and scepters, memorabilia and more. There is an entrance fee.
