From Palmer, follow the Palmer-Fishhook Road north. After turning into a gravel road, you will pass through a forest and by one of the key streams of the goldrush era. Explore trails at the Independence Mine State Historical Park just up the road. Winding up the road, you eventually reach the 3,886-foot Hatcher Pass, where the US Ski Team practices and outstanding views.
