See 50-million-year-old coral and oyster fossils and shell beds at Fossil Canyon, showing its history of being in the ocean. The sediments in this area have fossils of several hundred sheelfish and animals that lived in a fertile savanna some two million years ago, making it one of the largest fossil collection of Pliocene and Pleistocene fossil. The canyon is part of the Yuca Desert Recreation Area.
