Established in 1867, Fort Lyon was used by the military until 1889 and later became a sanitarium for people with tuberculosis, including Kit Carson who died in the surgeon’s quarters. The surgeon’s quarters were moved and became the Kit Carson Chapel which is open to the public. Currently, Fort Lyon is a hospital.
