Fort O’Brien State Historic Site preserves the remnants of Fort O’Brien, built first in 1775 destroyed and refortified in 1777. The fort was used during three wars, the American Revolution, the War of 1812 and the Civil War. Explore the bronze cannon known as “Napoleon” which fired 12-pound cannonballs, and enjoy the beautiful views with a picnic overlooking the Machias Bay.
