Elephant Butte Lake State Park is New Mexico’s largest and most popular lake. Surprisingly, it is not named for the stegomastodon skeletons, an ancient elephant relative found in this area, but for the shape of an island within the lake. The island is the eroded core of an ancient volcano. The park has year-round camping, bird watching, swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking.
