The Chicamacomico Lifesaving Station was built in 1874 to rescue sailors from the sea. In 1915 the U.S. Lifesaving Service evolved into the Coast Guard. On the National Historic Register, the buildings comprise one of the most complete lifesaving complexes on the Atlantic Coast. Museums display early lifesaving and coast guard technology, pieces of shipwrecked vessels and the stories of daring rescues and heroes who risked their lives.
