Buffington Island State Memorial is the only significant Civil War site in Ohio. It commemorates a battle fought in July 1863, which contributed to the capture of the famed Confederate cavalry raider, Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan. It is also the furthest north reached by the Confederate Army. Every July, features a reenactment of the battle.
