Early Rangers did not have the luxury of helicopters and airplanes to spot wildfires and instead relied on towers. The Ute Mountain Fire Tower is one of the few that still stands and is a national historic landmark. A short side trip on the unpaved Forest Road 221 and Forest Road 5 bring you to the tower where you can climb to the top for stunning views.
